It boasts one of the best short (6-mile) coastal walks in the UK - the Gylen Castle / Kerrera circuit, the tranquil Isle of kerrera lying half a mile offshore and a five-minute ferry ride (£4 return) from Oban, provides the perfect antidote to the bustle of Oban. Walkers or cyclists to this 'dry' isle that supports just 35 inhabitants may spot sea eagles and seals or even porpoise offshore. Five minutes' walk south of the welcoming Kerrera bunkhouse and tea-room visitors are rewarded with the imposing ruins of Gylen Castle and views across the Mull, the Slate Islands, Lismore and Jura. Built by the MacDougall's in 1587 Gylen Castle sits proudly on a clifftop looking down the Firth of Lorn. A mile northwest of the ferry jetty is Slatrach Bay, a sandy beach providing a terrific place for a family picnic. However, there are no shops so arrive with provisions.

Local Sights & Activities for Isle of Kerrera
The highest point on the island is 600 ft, from where there are great views across to Mull, the Slate Islands, Lismore and Jura. Otherwise, there's a good trail down to the ruins of Gylen Castle, built by the MacDougall's in 1582, which is perched on a cliff-top on the south coast. Near the castle is the Kerrera Bunkhouse, Tel. 570223, which has six beds, is open April-September, and can also arrange a lift to and from the ferry. There's also a tearoom here, which serves tea, coffee, juices, cakes and snacks.
The ferry lands at the spot where King Alexander II was mortally wounded while defeating the Vikings in battle in 1249. A mile northwest of here is Slatrach Bay, a nice sandy beach and a great place for a picnic.
