Connel lies on the Loch Etive where it narrows to the Firth of Lorne and the open sea. The village got its name from the Gaelic for rough water. The rocky shelf which creates the rapids are a treat to watch. Looking into the past of this charming village we will find that rail service made its mark here during 1880s on the newly opened Callander and Oban railway line. This rail route links to Oban and Glasgow.
The Connel Bridge one of the known landmark which crosses the Falls of Lora in Connel was completed in 1903, this cantilever bridge spans 500 feet with an elevation of 50 feet above the water level. It was built to carry the Ballachulish branch of the Callander and Oban railway, in the beginning it carried only the railway but later a roadway was also added to the bridge along the railway line.
This attractive village has few more things to look for, the large falls of Lora Hotel built in 1894, and the St Oran’s Church which boasts gorgeous collection of stained glass windows and great interiors. Moving north across the low lying peninsula of Benderloch heading to Loch Creran lies the Balcardan Castle which attracts many tourist to explore its charms.
