Nevoy

This name takes its origin from the lands of Nevay in Angus. Adam de Neveth witnessed the marking of the boundary of the lands of the Abbey of Arbroath in 1219. Alexander de Nave, taken prisoner in the wars with England, was given safe conduct to return to Scotland in 1422. John Nevay of that Ilk served as juror on an inquest in Angus in 1558. Black lists James Nevay as taking passage to Sweden in 1579 to become Governor of Westmanland and Dalarne, where he was subsequently murdered. The Reverend John Nevoy was a fervent Covenanter and preacher during the Wars of the Covenant against Charles I. Sir David Nevoy of Nevoy was elevated to the Supreme Court Bench and it is his arms which are now recorded for the family of Nevoy in the Lyon register.
