Muness Castle

The most northerly castle in the British Isle and still good condition although roofless. Walk up to visit.

Built from 1598 by Earl Patrick's main opponent in the Shetlands who may have felt that he needed a defensible home knowing the earl's depredations. It is believed that the castle was architected by Andrew Crawford who was also responsible for Scalloway but there is little documentation.

The castle was only inhabited until about 1627 when there was a major fire and it seems as though it was never repaired after. The top floor of the castle later disintegrated and it is also roofless

Opening Times

Walk up to view with no facilities.
